warehouse space available in east oakland

Tue, 09 Mar 2010 22:55:08 GMT

The building that houses bunnywarez, feral tattoo, tarot by m, dj mermaid and dj jovino has an opening!

Here is a link to the Craig's List posting:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/apa/1630831529.html

The posting sums it all up nicely.

We have gated parking, which is a bonus for an insurance rate reduction. There are a couple of exterior courtyards and one interior one. This unit has hallway-only access through a standard door (no double-doors or roll-up). There is a small sound room in the corner of the main room that can be converted to a bedroom, a tv viewing room or an actual sound room for music. Adjacent to the kitchen is a walk-in that is good for a darkroom. There are two good-sized bedrooms downstairs, one huge one upstairs which actually makes for an awesome work room.

The loft room gets warm in the summer time and it has fantastic light all year around.

The rent has also been reduced from it's initial offering of $2350 to $2100.

The managers have shown the space to a fair number of people but have ultimately not rented it out because it was not a good fit.

I'm forwarding this posting both on their and our behalf. We all want to get some awesome people in the building and continue to build up the 4001 community.

If you are interested in the place, please contact the managers through the Craig's List ad. And please tell them that I send you.

Help spread the word!

Meet Casey, a young lady who is battling a painful form of bone cancer called osteosarcoma, which has recently metastasized into her lungs and right shoulder.

Casey will be having her right leg and part of her pelvis amputated this September because the chemotherapy she's going through made her leg so brittle it fractured just from walking on it.

A week or so ago, Casey entered into a contest by Victoria's Secret. The prize is a trip for two to New York City for three days of pampering at a spa, staying in a nice hotel, a shopping trip and seeing a city she's never been to.... although she seems to be more excited about being able to ride in an airplane. ☺

If you have just a minute (you can vote once per day), please visit http://www.bodybyvictoria.com/#/Gallery/880 to cast a vote for Casey, and thank you - as always - for passing your kindness forward. Linking back to this entry (or re-posting it) in your LJ would be most appreciated as well.

Healthcare for the unsinsured

Fri, 17 Apr 2009 20:25:34 GMT

I know that this is a rather touchy subject for many people. It certainly is for me.

I'm one of the millions of people who is without health insurance. It sucks.

It sucks because I know that in the event that something traumatic should happen, I will be completely fucked. It scares me every now and then, but for the most part I choose not to focus too much on this and I go about my life as usual. This is perhaps not the smartest thing to do, but it's all I can manage.

The other thing that sucks about not having health insurance is that small doctor visits are rather cost prohibitive. If I lived within the city of San Francisco, I could theoretically just go and visit the Free Clinic. Actually, when I *did* live in San Francisco, I *did* visit the Free Clinic. This went really well and I was cured for my flesh-eating bacteria infection. ;)

Now, I live in Oakland where there are no Free Clinics. The nearest one to me is in Berkeley (http://www.berkeleyfreeclinic.org/). I haven't been there yet, so I cannot effectively comment on their ability to administer health care to those in need. The rumor has it that they are really busy and getting an appointment is difficult at best. I suppose one day I'll have to go to find out for myself.

While it's not free, there is another option available to all of us: Farmacia Remedios (http://www.farmaciaremedios.com/). They have both Oakland and San Francisco locations and their prices are right on par for a "doc-in-the-box."

I visited their Oakland location last week to get a prescription for a poison oak/ivy rash. I was in and out in under an hour and the visit set me back only $60. The doctor I saw was friendly, took his time and discussed treatment options with me. I'm certain that if I ever have a need to visit a doctor again, I'll go back there.

So, in short, there are some options for us who are "under-insured". I'd love to hear more stories from other people so we can compile a more comprehensive list of resources to make things a little more tolerable.

climbing meh

Fri, 17 Apr 2009 05:54:08 GMT

I'm back from climbing. I had a pretty crappy session overall. I guess I'm still recovering from the Poison Ivy/Oak rash/drugs and nonesuch.

It's super frustrating to know that I was getting really strong, and then knocked back a considerable amount in only a week. It really drains my motivation to push myself hard during days like today. I guess I just need to be patient and let things happen as they happen and not try to become overly competitive with myself.

MEH!

cartoon meme

Fri, 03 Apr 2009 08:03:35 GMT

A couple of years ago, [info]rstevens posted a cartoon meme to his LiveJournal. Tonight, while cleaning out my FTP space, I found the version that I did.

Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to do the same. Please comment or post yours here as well as your own journal so I know that you are playing along.

V7, bitches!

Mon, 23 Mar 2009 06:20:05 GMT

Today has been on of those weird days when nothing really goes as planned but the end result was far better tan anticipated.

I met [info]lordkook at GWPC for a climbing session. We messed around here and there on various problems and I eventually went back to work on that V7 problem that I have been working on for the last month. I got some new beta from someone on Thursday night that seemed to make sense to me, so I thought I would try it out.

It turned out that this one new move made the hardest part of the project considerably easier and I quickly moved through it and onto the next hold that was giving me problems. Because of the new movements, the body position was improved and allowed me to flow through the rest of the route with greater ease. On my 4th attempt of the day, I got it! Of course, since none of my regular climbing partners actually witnessed me complete this route, I'll have to repeat my efforts on Tuesday.

I stayed for another hour after Jeremy took off and worked a new problem that I'm sure to get on Tuesday night. When I was leaving, I checked my voicemail and there was a message from a friend of mine whom I didn't know was a climber wondering if he could take the lead climbing belay test with me today. I immediately called him back and then drank down a protein shake for a little energy boost for the additional climbing.

We did one 5.10a warm-up route and then got on the list to take the lead test. He did a great job and climbed really smooth and clean and took the requisite fall at the top. When it was my turn to climb, I remarked that I was nervous because I felt like I was also being analyzed. At he first clip, I actually dropped the rope and I kinda laughed, "you might as well just take away my lead card now," as a joke. I sent the rest of the route and took my fall as well. It was so quiet in the gym this afternoon that I could hear the rope creak and tighten under stress -- something I have not actually heard before. It's funny because I usually spend so much effort avoiding falling that I haven't taken a big fall in a long time. I think I need to do more of that.

After my second session, I phoned up [info]djmermaid to check in on her whereabouts. It turns out that she was in line with [info]dr_beep and [info]fairyarmadillo for the final shows at The Parkway. Initially I was going to take BART back home and then drive or bike back to the theatre and then I gave it some more thought and decided to try to walk there instead.

The journey was a simple 30 minute stroll and it made me re-think my understanding of that part of Oakland and how easy it is to get around in that part of town.

We wound up getting tickets to both The Wrestler and the final show Que Viva La Lucha -- a documentary about Mexican Wrestling in Tiajuana. Both films were fantastic and we also had the pleasure of dancing to the music of Oakland's own Carne Cuda as the final film's opening act.

I have to say, the closing night was heartwarming and heartbreaking. The Parkway is an amazing theatre whose proprietors are immensely involved in local community as well as providing a fresh alternative to the overpriced megaplex experience.

I hope that something amicable will resolve to prevent the Parkway theatre for disappearing for good. When I left, I told the walls, "I'll be waiting for you."

Thanks Parkway.

The Parkway is going away!

Thu, 19 Mar 2009 05:42:57 GMT

This very saddening email just arrived in my inbox about an hour ago. I'd like to get a HUGE group together for the final show, whatever it may be, for Sunday.

THE PARKWAY SPEAKEASY THEATER CLOSES ITS DOORS
AND GOES DARK FOR GOOD THIS SUNDAY, MARCH 22, 2009:
THE END OF AN ERA

Dear Loyal Supporters:

This is a sad but true message from Kyle Fischer, CEO of Speakeasy Theaters, and Catherine Fischer, President of Speakeasy Theaters.

After more than twelve years of serving the great cultural crossroad of Oakland, the Parkway Speakeasy Theater will be closing at the end of business day this Sunday, March 22, 2009. From African Diaspora to Thrillville to lesbian fashion shows and educational porn, the Parkway has offered an eclectic array of movies and events. It was the first theater in California to offer food, beer and wine service in a lounge style movie theater. With a nudge or a push from the community, there was little programming the Parkway theater would not try in order to better be a community center and a safe haven for diverse ideas. The Parkway brought Baby Brigade for the shuttered and abandoned parents of newborns, the first international black gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender film festival and Sunday Salon, a free event for cultural and community enhancement. We, at the Parkway Speakeasy Theater, are deeply proud of the Parkway and will profoundly miss serving its community. Thank you for your patronage.

Programming at Parkway will remain as scheduled this Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21. Stay tuned for special announcements about this Sunday, the final day of operations.

The Speakeasy Experience lives on at the Cerrito. Most special events booked for Parkway, including regular attractions like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," will be moving there. Stay tuned to our web site and this newsletter for updates.

Please direct all inquiries to Kyle Fischer, kf@speakeasytheaters.com. Messages should be brief and pertinent, out of respect for this difficult reality, but will be appreciated. This is a tough time for all of us.

Cheers.

Jammiez now online!

Mon, 16 Mar 2009 09:11:09 GMT

To quote Kermit the Frog: YAAAAAYYY!!!

On Friday, we converted our living room into a photo studio and spent about three hours shooting photos, drinking beer and laughing at some of the silly things that were caught on film. While most of the photos won't see the light of day, we managed to get a whole bunch of amazing product photos as a result.

Saturday, I spent about 12 hours working in photoshop to clean up the photos, write descriptions and update our site. And now I am extremely pleased to announce that our jammiez are online!

jammiez!

Sat, 14 Mar 2009 09:11:00 GMT

Our photoshoot today was absolutely amazing! We had so many friends show up to model which made us both really happy bunnies. Tonight we actually managed to narrow down all of the best shots down to a mere 130 photos. This task alone took quite some time.

This weekend I'll be rocking my Photoshop skillz to do all the fancy re-touching that needs to be done before posting things online. Throughout the weekend you'll start to see some more things trickle in and some existing product photos be updated. I'm certain that I'll be working on this project for a while, but I was so eager to get started that I've already finished the black cat jammies!

Be the first on your block! :)

More to come!
For sure!

models needed this Friday!

Thu, 12 Mar 2009 00:44:51 GMT

bunnywarez has a photoshoot planned for this Friday, March 13 at 1pm. We'll have our kick-ass photographer friend Splat on the camera and YOU as the model! We'll dress you up in bunnywarez goodies and YOU will be the one everyone looks at when they visit our site to buy the stuff you'll be showing off. We are seeking a variety of folks to model, so please do not assume we don't mean you!

Since we're kinda on the broke side of the fence right now, we can't really pay all that much but we DO want to reward and thank you for your time and beauty. We'll be offering a $40 store credit for anything that we currently have in-stock (which is a lot of stuff). We'll gladly offer you copies of your photos too (once they've been processed, natch).

We'll also be catering pizza and beer, because we like that stuff.

If you are interested, please drop us an email or give us a ring so we know what our head-count will be. If you can't be here promptly at 1pm, that's okay as well. We will surely be going for a few hours since we have a bunch of things to shoot.

Thanks!

massive letdown

Sat, 07 Mar 2009 22:50:09 GMT

Well, I kinda knew better than to trust anything called a "Massive," but I went anyway.

One of the side rooms was playing some really awesome middle eastern -style electro for a while, but the new DJ kinda bombed. We then wandered around some in search of good music. The beginning of Carl Cox's set was fun and he was certainly into playing the superstar. At some point, all the music in the big rooms became very homogenized trance crap and the smaller side rooms were too packed to move.

Around 3:30 we decided to take a cab home where I spun a little electro to clear out the brain and then I collapsed in bed.

So, meh on the party.

Hanging out with M was rad though. Hi M.

question: (for the old people) did you wait in line for Star Wars?

Mon, 02 Mar 2009 06:54:36 GMT

I waited in line over 4 hours to see Star Wars -- NOT on the opening day! Star Wars was so popular, that people would wait in line for several showings to see the film. It was so popular that people lined up for several days in succession to see the film.

No other film has commanded such attention.

So, what did you do when Star Wars came out?

question: why did YOU get a cell phone?

Mon, 02 Mar 2009 05:54:41 GMT

I got mine because I wanted to coordinate snowboarding trips back in the dot-com boom days when I shared a cabin and went snowboarding every chance I got.

What made you decide to get a cell phone?

wondercon load-in: done!

Fri, 27 Feb 2009 06:46:54 GMT

Tonight we did our big load-in to WonderCon.

I gotta be honest here: it was epic!

We got started with our van packing at about 1pm this afternoon. [info]djmermaid packed and organized all of the bins that contained hats, ears, paws and other stuff and I got to sucking the air out of our stacks of spacebags that hold all of our jammies -- another genius idea of M's -- without then, there would be no way in hell we would have been able to tetris everything into the bunny van.

We finished packing the van and hit the road around 4pm. After a brief stop to Acme Display for some fixtures and a full-length mirror, we proceeded over to Moscone Center for load-in.

The Moscone back-stage is *really* weird! As we proceeded down the loading dock ramp and around the corner, I was completely amazed at the fact that we were actually driving on the exhibit hall floor! This fact, alone, made me really silly with glee.

While the union laborers helped unpack the van, they all marveled (pun intended) at our spacebag solution. They then were astounded that we brought so much stuff and wondered it it would all fit within a 10' x 10' booth space. Admittedly, so did I.

Well, it all fit! And quite well at that. We even managed to construct a space for behind-the-scenes storage and we also installed a cushioned floor. One of our neighbors was impressed by our flooring solution and headed over to Costco for some of his own.

The show opens at noon tomorrow, but we'll be arriving a bit on the early side to put the finishing touches on the booth and to be ready for the crowds to swarm in. I'm certain it will be a mad-house with fanboys (and girls) rushing off to see their favorites and the rest to wander in search for something fun to buy.

If you can make it to the show, please stop by to say hi!

NEW: two stickers and cheaper shipping!

Wed, 18 Feb 2009 09:25:33 GMT

We've finally got around to putting our paw and yiff stickers online! They're only $1 each. Cheap!

And, speaking of cheap: we just dropped our "handling charge" down to a measly $1. You know we're not making any money here, kids!

- - -

We're still very hard at work getting ready for WonderCon and it looks like we're going to have a respectfully-stocked booth this year. If you missed out on our kigurumi-style jammies at Further Confusion, you'll have another chance in only ten short days!

See you there!

(fwd/repost) 4 Units opening! 2 in our building & 2 in the sister building

Tue, 27 Jan 2009 22:45:32 GMT

Hey peeps of niceness.
There are two large units in 4001 opening up.
The first is #27. It's super sweet. 2.5 floors. Nice kitchen. Sadly just 1 bathroom. 3 or 4 bedrooms. A world of storage. Big double doors (and a regular front door). Lotsa windows. One brick wall. Opens onto the back parking area. Space for a little garden.
2000 square feet. $2300

#9 is being vacated right now (Sad! I will miss Carne Cruda living there). I haven't been in it but it looks like they have a washer and dryer in the unit. They also have a hot tub. Not sure if that's staying. I think it's 3 or more bedrooms. One entrance faces onto 40th St. (big door, big enough to get a hot tub out of) and another entrance is inside.
Don't quite remember the footage but I think it's 1700. $1950

Then across the street tucked behind that little sewing shop is another series of smaller lofts. Will and I checked them out when we were first moving from Fleming. They are tall, more narrow and 'lofty' than the quirky apartments in 4001 (at least the one we looked at). Both units are 900 square feet and $1150

You can call the building managers Chris & Delene @ 510.533.3919 for more info or to check them out.

Perks: being our neighbors, good burritos, close to BART, you can literally do whatever you want to the spaces, pets are OK
Bummers: in between the train and BART, sometimes there is loud polka, I guess the 'hood is a little sketchy

An update on my car

Thu, 15 Jan 2009 05:40:17 GMT

So, after much contemplation and good advice from my friends, I have decided to keep the car for at least another year. The bad side of this story is that California has changed their smog regulations to now require older automobiles to not only be tested annually, but also undergo an additional test costing around $30. This brings the already over-priced smog check to a total of $100. Annually. On top of an increased registration fee of $75. For poor/frugal folks like me who cannot justify or afford a new-model automobile, this strikes a blow in the most tender of spots: the wallet.

Normally I would not fuss much about this, but these days I'm living from no paycheck to no paycheck. My savings is nearly tapped and the business is just able to sustain itself -- but not its owners. While my automobile is part luxury, it's also a necessity every now and then. I'm fortunate enough to have something that only costs me insurance, gasoline, oil and registration; which isn't a lot of money. But it also totals an amount of money that can, at times, become a questionable expense.

I appreciate all the valuable feedback I have received from my friends. It was a difficult decision to come to, and I didn't really make it until this morning, but it's done now.

Oh, and as for my plans for this thing... I'm contemplating cutting off the top this summer so that I can finally drive around in my own convertible. :)
